ICIMOD and Nepal Red Cross launch <\/strong>‘PrakopAlert<\/a>‘, a disaster-preparedness app for Nepal as authorities sound alarm about risks of extreme events following projections of above-normal temperatures and rainfall this monsoon<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>Dehradun, May 22<\/p>\n

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development<\/a><\/u>\u00a0(ICIMOD) and the\u00a0Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS)<\/a><\/u>\u00a0have\u00a0partnered to\u00a0develop a new mobile app\u00a0to strengthen community resilience and disaster preparedness in Nepal.<\/p>\n

The app, called ‘PrakopAlert<\/a>‘, is targeted at members of the public and provides users with weather forecasts for rainfall, temperature, lightning alerts, hail warnings, wind speed, and stream flow information for rivers across Nepal.<\/p>\n

Through access to timely and accurate information, the app is designed to empower communities take steps to mitigate risks associated with extreme weather events and potential floods.<\/p>\n

Nepal is frontline to extreme events linked to temperature rise. Between 2012 and 2021, in property losses alone, extreme climate events have cost the country $17 million each year, according to the Asian Development Bank. The economic impact of river flooding could triple in the next six years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis app marks a major step forward in providing forecasting to communities at risk in Nepal,\u201d said Izabella Koziell, Deputy Director General of ICIMOD, \u201chelping protect property and lives by allowing users to access real-time weather updates and river discharge data from satellite and other monitoring technologies.\u201d<\/p>\n

This mobile app is also designed to support Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) practitioners, volunteers, and organizations focusing on anticipatory actions. It features hourly weather forecasts, flood updates tailored to specific areas of interest, and color-coded icons for quick comprehension. The app is available in both Nepali and English languages.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough innovative solutions like the \u2018PrakopAlert\u2019 app, we are dedicated to bridging the gap between science, technology, and local communities,\u201d stated Rudra Adhikari, Deputy Director at NRCS. \u201cOur commitment lies in leveraging science and technology to enable timely communication and proactive actions, ultimately ensuring resilience and prosperity.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u2018PrakopAlert\u2019 app is now available for free on the\u00a0Android Play Store<\/a>\u00a0and will be continuously improved based on user feedback to better meet the evolving needs of communities.<\/p>\n

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), is a regional knowledge development and learning centre serving the eight regional member countries of the Hindu Kush Himalaya \u2013 Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan \u2013 and based in Kathmandu, Nepal. Globalisation and climate change have an increasing influence on the stability of fragile mountain ecosystems and the livelihoods of mountain people.
