DUJ condemns attack on Rishkesh journalist ,Dehradun SSP acts tough, disbands SOG (rural), reshuffle police station<\/p>\n

Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajay Singh has disbanded the Special Operation Group (SOG) Rural of Dehradun district and ordered large scale reshuffle of police staff from Rishikesh police station following a murderous stack on Yogesh Dimri, a journalist allegedly by a person involved in illegal liquor trade. Various social,political and journalist organisations have strongly condemned the attack on Yogesh Dimri, who is admitted in a serious condition at AIIMS, Rishikesh. \u00a0Yogesh Dimri has been exposing the drug and liquor trade in Rishikesh-Haridwar area for the past sometimes.<\/p>\n
The Delhi Union of Journalists has condemned the life threatening attack on Uttarakhand based journalist Yogesh Dimri, whose small digital channel \u2018Aanwala News\u2019 has been in the forefront of exposes about the drug and liquor mafia operating in the state. Dimri is also known for his bold reportage of the Ankita Bhandari rape and murder case. The attack left him badly injured. The Union demanded an immediate inquiry and adequate compensation and protection for Dimri.<\/p>\n
The DUJ also expresses its shock at the Yogi government\u2019s new Digital Media Policy. This policy is nothing but an \u201cI scratch your back and you scratch mine\u201d method of government sponsored paid news. Under it \u2018influencers\u2019 can earn up to Rs 8 lakh per month for promoting state schemes. Much worse, this policy threatens that anyone who posts \u2018anti-national\u2019 content on social media may be<\/p>\n
punished by imprisonment for anywhere from three years to life in jail. Further, this \u2018policy\u2019 carries the threat that obscene and defamatory content posted online will result in criminal defamation charges being brought by the government. Both carrot and stick will be applied to make sure the media toes the official line.<\/p>\n
The union noted with concern that attacks on the media are growing countrywide, whether they are attacks by police on journos covering the protests against the Kolkata rape murder case or the recent attack on mediapersons by the Jawaharlal Nehru University\u2019s private security agency Cyclops. In the latter case journos covering a student protest were roughed up and a camera and other equipment snatched. The union strongly objected to such strong arm tactics by university authorities and their agencies towards journalists covering lawful protests.<\/p>\n
The union also expressed its dismay over e growing number of attacks on journalists\u2019 livelihoods, with more organisations laying off media persons. Most recently, there is news of the India Today group letting go nearly 200 people, most of them employed with Aajtak and its digital verticals. We strongly object to this pattern of dismissing mediapersons to replace them with AI tools. This, the DUJ fears, will result in further diluting the low journalism standards of many news channels even if it increases their profits.<\/p>\n
