Month-long public movement against UCC announced<\/p>\n

On International Women’s Day, today, representatives of various organizations from all parts of Uttarakhand who had gathered here for \u00a0a meeting resolved to start a one month long public movement against the recently implemented Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand. The meeting termed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) implemented by the Uttarakhand government from 27 January as \u2018Anti-Women\u2019, \u2018Anti-Constitutional\u2019 and \u2018Anti-People\u2019 and sought its immediate revocation. It was decided to start a public movement opposing the UCC seeking its\u2019 repeal and continuing the fight against it in the court of law. It was unanimously observed that UCC would in future result in the \u00a0increase the attack on the safety and freedom of women.<\/p>\n
A proposal was passed to organize dharnas against UCC at various places in the state from April 11 to 14, 2025 along with signature campaigns and public meetings in the next one month.<\/p>\n
Speakers in the meeting said that under Article 44 of the Constitution suggested that there should be a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for the entire country but a state government does not have the right to make it.<\/p>\n
Various speakers pointed that the UCC law is a violation of the \u2018Putta Swamy judgment\u2019 given by the Supreme Court regarding privacy, in which it is said that the use of Aadhaar card will be necessary only for the benefit of government schemes, but in UCC, Aadhaar and the mobile number linked with it have been made mandatory for the registration of marriage, divorce, will and live-in relationship and there is a provision to deprive the person of welfare schemes if he does not register, which is discriminatory.<\/p>\n
The meeting observed that Section 8 of the UCC rule states that it is mandatory to register marriages that took place before the year 2010 and between 2010 and 27 January 2025 within 6 months and marriages after 27 January 2025 within 60 days. Under this, those whose marriage, live-in relationship, divorce and life partner died 50-60 years ago will also have to fill a 16-page registration form. The BJP government is also harassing the elderly by imposing UCC on them.<\/p>\n
The speakers said that due to the UCC law, the youth who do inter-religious, inter-caste marriages of their own free will \u00a0have to face problems and it will increase the incidents of honor killing. This law does not increase the rights of women but also restricts the good practices of Muslim and other religions.<\/p>\n
