{"id":6598,"date":"2025-03-12T00:24:42","date_gmt":"2025-03-12T07:24:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thenortherngazette.com\/?p=6598"},"modified":"2025-03-12T00:53:48","modified_gmt":"2025-03-12T07:53:48","slug":"holi-colours-a-taboo-in-some-remote-kumoan-villages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thenortherngazette.com\/index.php\/2025\/03\/12\/holi-colours-a-taboo-in-some-remote-kumoan-villages\/","title":{"rendered":"Holi colours a taboo in some remote Kumoan villages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Holi colours a taboo in some remote Kumoan villages<\/p>\n<p>B.D.Kasniyal<\/p>\n<p>Pithoragarh, March 12<\/p>\n<p>As celebrations for the festival of colours \u2018Holi\u2019 reach its\u2019 crescendo in entire Kumaon region, interestingly, over 125 villages of Bageshwar, Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar districts situated in interior northern parts of Kumaon region keep themselves away from these celebrations as per their faith their presiding deities detest from colours.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Over 125 villages of Talla Darma, Talla Johar regions of Pithoragarh and Malla Danpur regions of Bageshwar districts do not celebrate \u2018Holi\u2019 festival as their presiding deities become angry over playing of colours,&#8221; said Puran Pandey, a resident of Munsiyari town.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6600\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6600\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6600 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thenortherngazette.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Chiplakedar2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"578\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thenortherngazette.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Chiplakedar2.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/thenortherngazette.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Chiplakedar2-300x135.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thenortherngazette.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Chiplakedar2-1024x462.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thenortherngazette.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Chiplakedar2-768x347.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6600\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nandsek temple on way to Chipla Kedar temple in Bangapani sub-division of Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018Holi\u2019 is a \u2018Sanatani Hindu\u2019 festival that begins from first Sunday of Hindu calendar month of \u2018Magh\u2019 and conclude on \u2018Pratipada\u2019 of \u2018Krishna Paksha\u2019 of the \u2018Chaltra\u2019 month. &#8220;It is a Sanatani Hindu festival that was brought to kumaon region by Chand kings of Champawaat in the 14th century,\u00a0 as the kings initiated it through their Brahmin priests as the influence of Brahminism spread in the region. Whereas the Holi is not celebrated in areas where the \u2018Sanatanl\u2019 traditions have not yet reached,\u201d said Padma Datt Pant, a cultural historian of eastern Kumaon region.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In over a dozen villages of Sama region of Bageshwar district, the assumptions are such that if villagers play with colours, the local presiding\u00a0deities punish them in form of natural disasters,&#8221; said Dan Singh Koranga,\u00a0 a resident of the region.<\/p>\n<p>Not only the remote villages of Kumaon region but three villages of Rudraprayag district of Garhwal region including Kwili and Khurjhang have not celebrated \u2018Holi\u2019 from last 150 years after the presiding deity of these villages, namely \u2018Tripura Sundari\u2019, played havoc upon these villages in the form of natural disasters.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6601\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6601\" style=\"width: 1158px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6601 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thenortherngazette.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Chplakedar3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1158\" height=\"652\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thenortherngazette.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Chplakedar3.jpg 1158w, https:\/\/thenortherngazette.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Chplakedar3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thenortherngazette.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Chplakedar3-1024x577.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thenortherngazette.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Chplakedar3-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thenortherngazette.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Chplakedar3-390x220.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1158px) 100vw, 1158px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6601\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shukdo Kund on Chipla Kedar yatra route<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8221; Apart from several areas in Uttarakhnd, where the \u2018Sanatani\u2019 traditions have not yet been fully imbibed several villages of tribal regions of Banaskantha in Gujrat and\u00a0 Durgapur regions of Jharkhand do not celebrated \u2018Holi\u2019\u00a0 citing reasons of curse or wrath of local deities,&#8221; said Pant<\/p>\n<p>Jeewan Varti, a journalist from Madkoti region of Talla Johar region of Pithoragarh district has said that \u00a0more than a dozen villages of that region having faith in \u2018Chipla Kedar\u2019, a highly revered presiding deity of the region, do not celebrated \u2018Holi\u2019 as the deity not only detests colours but also romantic songs sung during \u2018Holi\u2019 celebrations \u00a0as well. &#8220;Even the devotees of \u2018Chipla Kedar\u2019, situated at 3700 meters high peak, not allowed to wear colourful clothes during worship and \u2018Jatra\u2019 of the deity and all devotees and priests wear while clothes during worship of the \u2018Chipla Kedar\u2019,&#8221; said Jeewan Warti.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While \u2018Holi\u2019 is still prohibited for their devotees by local deities, some \u2018Sanatani\u2019 festivals like \u2018Deepawali\u2019 and \u2018Dushehara\u2019 have found acceptance in these remote regions as they have started celebrating \u2018Ramleela\u2019 and \u2018Deepawali\u2019,&#8221; said Warti.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Holi colours a taboo in some remote Kumoan villages B.D.Kasniyal Pithoragarh, March 12 As celebrations for the festival of colours \u2018Holi\u2019 reach its\u2019 crescendo in entire Kumaon region, interestingly, over 125 villages of Bageshwar, Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar districts situated in interior northern parts of Kumaon region keep themselves away from these celebrations as &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":6599,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[92,33,1284,91,59],"tags":[3213,1970,730,3215,3214,102],"class_list":["post-6598","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-featured","category-international","category-international-political-national","category-national","category-uttarakhand","tag-chipla-kedar-yatra","tag-holi-festival","tag-kumoan-region","tag-padma-datt-pant-a-cultural-historian-of-kumoan","tag-tallajohar","tag-uttarakhand"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
