Padma Shri Dr. B.K.S. Sanjay, distinguished surgeon, author, and President of AIIMS Guwahati, delivered an insightful lecture on \u201cRoad Safety: A Shared Responsibility\u201d at Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University, Bareilly, on 17 November 2025. Addressing a large gathering of students, faculty members, and university officials, Dr. Sanjay highlighted the rising incidence of road traffic accidents in India and stressed that most injuries and fatalities are preventable with timely awareness and responsible behaviour. Citing national data, he noted that nearly 70% of road traffic accidents occur between midnight and 8 a.m., and nearly half of them are fatal, underscoring the urgent need for safer driving practices, especially during late hours. Drawing from his extensive surgical experience and nationwide road-safety initiatives, he explained how simple preventive steps\u2014such as wearing seat belts and helmets, avoiding over speeding and distracted driving, and strictly following traffic rules\u2014can significantly reduce trauma and disability.<\/p>\n
Dr. Sanjay emphasised the critical role of youth in promoting safe driving habits and urged universities to incorporate road-safety education into academic and community programmes. He also underlined the importance of early first-aid response and emergency preparedness in saving lives during the \u201cgolden hour.\u201d The interactive session saw enthusiastic participation from students who asked questions on trauma care, behavioural change, and ways to support national road-safety campaigns. The Director Dr. A. K. Shrivastava, Dr. Brijesh Kumar and other faculty members praised Dr. Sanjay\u2019s commitment to public health and acknowledged his continued efforts in raising awareness about road traffic injuries across the country. The university expressed its gratitude for his impactful and inspiring address, which left a deep impression on the academic community and reinforced the urgent need for shared responsibility in ensuring safer roads for all.<\/p>\n
