In a stunning turn of events ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections, a former Member of Parliament, Dr. Tarun Kumar Mandal, from Jayanagar Lok Sabha constituency has found his name deleted from the supplementary voter list as per the controversial Special Intensive Revisions (SIR) being undertaken in the state. More than 60 lakh voters from various of walks of lives were removed as voters from the voters list in the SIR. More than 37 lakh cases have been disposed by the 705 judicial officers deployed to look into the appeals of the deleted voters. Two supplementary lists have been released the last one on March 27, 2026 but interestingly, the name of Dr. Tarun Mandal is not included.<\/p>\n

A veteran of Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) member, he had represented the Jayanagar seat from West Bengal in Lok Sabha from 2009 till 2014.Dr. Tarun Mandal, a cardiologist by profession has formally petitioned the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, seeking immediate judicial intervention in his matter.<\/p>\n

He has also petitioned the President of India, Lok Sabha Speaker, Chief Electoral Officer, West Bengal and Chief Justice of India (CJI) regarding the removal of his name in voters\u2019 list. His name and that of his wife Mahua were deleted in SIR but the name of his wife has been added in the second supplementary list but his name is still missing.<\/p>\n

The exclusion has sparked concerns regarding the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in the state, with Dr. Mandal questioning the plight of ordinary citizens if a former Parliamentarian and retired senior government official can be “erased” from the rolls.<\/p>\n

Dr. Tarun Mandal who was recently in Dehradun said, \u201cIf This Happens to an MP, What About the Common Man?”<\/p>\n

In his letter dated March 28, 2026, Dr. Mandal expressed disbelief that his name was omitted despite submitting all required documentation. He highlighted a distinguished career that included serving as an MP for Jaynagar (SC) from 2009\u20132014, government Service: 21 years as a Group I Medical Officer (Sr. CMO) through the UPSC and continuous residence in the South Howrah Assembly Constituency since 2005\/06.<\/p>\n

Dr. Mandal in his petition has provided a detailed timeline to account for any previous discrepancies in the electoral records. He explained that during the 2002 Summary Revision, he was involved in a legal battle at the High Court and CAT regarding a transfer to Nashik, Maharashtra, which disrupted his enlistment.<\/p>\n

He wrote that he holds a valid Passport, Aadhaar, PAN card, and an official Ex-MP Identity Card, all tied to his Howrah residence. He also pointed out the irony that he was originally elected to the Lok Sabha using the very address from which he has now been deleted.<\/p>\n

With the 2026 polls fast approaching, it would worth watching if the High Court will mandate an emergency restoration of his voting rights. The case highlights potential systemic issues in the voter verification process currently unfolding across West Bengal.<\/p>\n

“I wonder what would be the plight of poor common people of West Bengal who have been deleted from the voter\u2019s list,\u201d Dr. Mandal told this correspondent while talking on telephone emphasizing the gravity of the administrative lapse.<\/p>\n
