Heart Attacks and Strokes: Recognizing the Signs, Saving Lives \u2013 Dr. Sushil<\/p>\n

In a significant initiative aimed at strengthening community awareness about cardiovascular diseases, Head Department of Cardiology GMCH Jammu, Dr. Sushil Sharma, held a day-long cardiac awareness-cum-health check-up camp in collaboration with the Sikh Empathy & Welfare Association at Gurdwara Bala Pritam, Trikuta Nagar, Jammu. The programme was designed to sensitize the public about the growing burden of heart attacks and strokes and to encourage people to embrace preventive healthcare practices.<\/p>\n
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Sushil stated that heart attacks and strokes are among the most serious medical emergencies and can often occur unexpectedly. He explained that warning signs of a heart attack may include chest pain or pressure, heaviness, breathlessness, sweating, nausea, dizziness and discomfort extending towards the arm, shoulder, jaw, neck or back. A stroke, on the other hand, may present with sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg, particularly on one side, along with difficulty in speaking, confusion, impaired vision, dizziness, loss of balance or a sudden severe headache. He stressed that such symptoms should never be ignored and immediate medical assistance should be sought, as every minute is crucial in limiting damage to the heart or brain.<\/p>\n
Dr. Sharma emphasized that several cardiovascular risk factors are preventable and can be effectively controlled through sustained lifestyle modifications. Hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, tobacco consumption, physical inactivity, unhealthy dietary patterns, excessive alcohol intake and prolonged stress significantly increase the likelihood of cardiovascular complications. He advised people to adopt a balanced, cardio protective diet incorporating fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, pulses and lean protein while limiting salt, refined sugar, processed foods and unhealthy fats. Regular exercise, adequate sleep, weight management and stress reduction, he said, should become integral components of everyday life.<\/p>\n
Expressing concern over the increasing prevalence of sedentary habits and unhealthy eating practices, particularly among communities in Urban , semi-urban and rural areas, Dr. Sushil urged families and community institutions to actively promote healthier choices. He highlighted the importance of periodic health assessments and monitoring of blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol, particularly among individuals with a family history or other risk factors. Early identification and appropriate management of hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia can substantially reduce the possibility of serious cardiovascular events. He also called upon people to strictly adhere to prescribed medications and medical advice rather than waiting for symptoms to become severe.<\/p>\n
Dr. Sushil reiterated that awareness, prevention and timely intervention constitute the cornerstone of cardiovascular protection. He said that educating communities about emergency warning signs can empower families to respond promptly when a heart attack or stroke occurs, thereby improving the chances of survival and recovery. He appealed to the public to adopt cardio protective habits , remain physically active, make nutritious food choices and undergo regular health evaluations. \u201cA healthy heart and a healthy brain are fundamental to a long, active and fulfilling life. By making small but consistent changes in our daily habits and responding swiftly to warning signs, we can prevent many cardiovascular tragedies and build healthier communities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
