Emphasizing the need to strengthen preventive cardiac care and bring specialized health services closer to the community, Head Department of Cardiology, GMCH Jammu, Dr. Sushil Sharma in collaboration with Sri Sri Rural Development Programme Trust ( The Art of Living) and NHPC, conducted a day-long Cardiac Awareness-cum-Health Check-up Camp at NITS Polytechnic, Indira Nagar, Miran Sahib, Jammu.During the camp, participants were extensively sensitized about the increasing burden of heart disease and the importance of timely screening. Special emphasis was laid on healthy dietary practices, regular physical activity, maintaining optimum body weight, avoiding tobacco, managing stress and following a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. Dr. Sushil interacted with the participants and encouraged them to undergo periodic health assessments rather than waiting for symptoms to appear.<\/p>\n
Dr. Sushil Sharma stated that cardiovascular healthcare is witnessing a major shift from treating disease after it becomes clinically evident to identifying risk much earlier and preventing complications before they occur. He observed that conditions including hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity and hereditary predisposition can gradually damage the cardiovascular system without producing obvious symptoms. Contemporary risk-assessment approaches, including the PREVENT equations, enable healthcare professionals to evaluate cardiovascular vulnerability through a wider range of health parameters. Such assessment can help identify individuals who may benefit from early lifestyle intervention, closer observation or preventive treatment. He stressed that feeling healthy does not necessarily mean that the heart and blood vessels are free from disease, as cardiovascular conditions can remain silent for prolonged periods before presenting as a heart attack, stroke or heart failure.<\/p>\n
Discussing recent advances in cardiology, Dr. Sushil highlighted how modern imaging and screening technologies have strengthened the early detection of structural and vascular problems. Identifying arterial plaque and other abnormalities can provide valuable insight into an individual\u2019s cardiovascular risk and help physicians plan suitable preventive measures. He also underlined the importance of maintaining healthy cholesterol levels, noting that elevated LDL cholesterol contributes significantly to plaque formation in the arteries. Newer oral and injectable medicines have expanded treatment options for lowering LDL levels and reducing the likelihood of major cardiovascular complications in appropriate patients. These developments have further promoted personalised care based on an individual\u2019s overall risk.<\/p>\n
Dr. Sushil also spoke about the increasing use of heart-protective medicines such as SGLT2 inhibitors. Originally developed for diabetes, these drugs have demonstrated important cardiac and kidney benefits among selected heart-failure patients, including some without diabetes. He stressed, however, that medical advances must complement healthy living. A balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, weight management, stress control and avoiding tobacco remain essential. People with high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, cholesterol problems or a family history of heart disease should undergo regular medical evaluation and appropriate screening.<\/p>\n
Concluding the programme, Dr. Sushil Sharma stated that the major advancement in modern cardiology lies not only in treating heart disease but also in preventing it before serious complications develop. He emphasized that early risk evaluation, timely screening, advanced diagnostic methods, appropriate treatment and healthy lifestyle practices can significantly improve heart health. He reaffirmed his commitment to organizing cardiac awareness and health-screening camps in various communities, enabling people to access trustworthy guidance and basic preventive care locally. He stressed that awareness is essential, as informed individuals are more likely to identify warning signs, seek medical assistance promptly and adopt healthier routines. The programme ended with a strong message promoting early awareness, assessment and action.<\/p>\n
