Underscoring the imperative of timely cardiovascular risk assessment and preventive healthcare Head Department of Cardiology, GMCH Jammu Dr Sushil Kumar Sharma held a day-long Cardiac Awareness-cum-Health Check-up Camp in association with LA Krishna Foundation at Miran Sahib, R.S. Pura Jammu. The initiative was aimed at sensitizing the local population about the growing burden of cardiovascular diseases and reinforcing the significance of primary prevention in curbing heart-related morbidity and mortality.<\/p>\n
While interacting with the people Dr Sushil Sharma stated that cardiovascular diseases remain one of the foremost causes of illness and premature death worldwide, encompassing conditions such as coronary artery disease, stroke and heart failure. He emphasized that cardiovascular disease can develop insidiously, with many individuals remaining apparently healthy until the onset of a major cardiac event.Regular health evaluation can help uncover important risk factors at an early stage. Assessment of blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol levels and body weight, along with evaluation of lifestyle and family history, can provide valuable insights into an individual’s cardiovascular health. He stressed that smoking, physical inactivity, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, unhealthy dietary habits and hereditary predisposition are among the major factors that deserve timely attention.<\/p>\n
Dr Sushil further highlighted the role of cardiovascular risk prediction and risk stratification in contemporary preventive cardiology. By integrating several clinical and lifestyle parameters, risk-assessment models can help estimate an individual’s probability of developing cardiovascular disease or experiencing a cardiovascular event over a specified period. Such assessments can assist physicians in tailoring lifestyle interventions, monitoring strategies and preventive treatment according to the individual’s risk profile. However, he cautioned that risk scores should not be interpreted as definitive or lifelong predictions, as cardiovascular risk is dynamic and may alter with advancing age, changing lifestyle, development of medical conditions and therapeutic interventions. Regular reassessment, coupled with sound clinical judgment, therefore remains essential.<\/p>\n
Emphasizing that prevention is fundamentally rooted in daily habits, Dr Sushil advised people to embrace a balanced and heart-friendly lifestyle. He recommended greater consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes while limiting excessive salt, unhealthy fats and highly processed foods. Regular physical activity, maintenance of healthy body weight, adequate sleep and effective stress management were identified as important pillars of cardiovascular wellness. He particularly cautioned against tobacco use, which substantially elevates the risk of heart attack and stroke. He also pointed towards the growing potential of digital health technologies, wearable devices, remote monitoring and artificial intelligence in strengthening early risk identification, while stressing that technology should augment, rather than substitute, professional medical assessment.<\/p>\n
Concluding his message, Dr Sushil Sharma said that knowing one’s cardiovascular risk is the first step towards taking meaningful preventive action. He maintained that identifying hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol and other risk factors is valuable only when followed by appropriate counseling, treatment and sustained follow-up.
