Early Heart Risk calls for Early Action : Dr Sushil Sharma<\/p>\n

A disturbing shift in the pattern of heart disease is becoming increasingly visible, with cardiac problems no longer confined to the later years of life. Young adults, professionals and even seemingly healthy individuals are increasingly being diagnosed with cardiovascular risk factors and, in some cases, suffering heart attacks at an unexpectedly early age. Raising awareness about this emerging challenge, Dr Sushil Kumar Sharma, Head, Department of Cardiology, GMCH Jammu, organized a day-long Cardiac Awareness-cum-Health Check-up Camp in collaboration with S.E.W.A. Society at Gurdwara Singh Sabha, Model Town, Gangyal, Jammu. The initiative focused on early identification of cardiac risk, preventive healthcare and sensitizing the community about the growing vulnerability of younger people to heart disease.<\/p>\n
Dr Sushil stated that the changing lifestyle landscape has created several conditions that can accelerate cardiovascular risk. Sedentary routines, prolonged sitting, excessive dependence on digital devices, unhealthy food choices, tobacco consumption, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, abnormal cholesterol, disturbed sleep and persistent mental stress are increasingly becoming part of everyday life. He observed that many individuals remain unaware of these silent risk factors until they manifest as a serious health problem. Regular exercise, wholesome nutrition, adequate rest, avoidance of tobacco and effective stress management, he emphasized, are among the most effective measures for preserving cardiovascular health.<\/p>\n
He further cautioned that age should never be considered an assurance against heart disease. Warning symptoms such as chest discomfort or pressure, unexplained breathlessness, unusual fatigue, palpitations, cold sweating, nausea or pain spreading towards the arm, back, neck or jaw should receive appropriate medical attention and should not automatically be attributed to stress or exhaustion. Dr Sushil stressed that timely recognition of symptoms and prompt medical intervention can substantially improve outcomes in cardiac emergencies. He also encouraged people, particularly those with risk factors or a family history of heart disease, to periodically monitor blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol.<\/p>\n
Addressing the gathering, Dr Sushil called for a shift from a culture that glorifies overwork, irregular schedules and unhealthy convenience towards one that values physical activity, balanced nutrition, adequate sleep and emotional well-being. \u201cHeart health cannot be postponed until old age. It is shaped by our habits from childhood and strengthened or weakened by the choices we make every day. We need to replace inactivity with movement, unhealthy convenience with informed nutrition and the false confidence of youth with a culture of prevention and early health assessment,\u201d he said. He added that preventive cardiology should move beyond hospitals and reach neighborhoods, workplaces, educational institutions and families.<\/p>\n
Dr Sushil reiterated that sustained community-level awareness, screening and healthy lifestyle practices can make a meaningful difference in reducing the burden of premature heart disease. \u201cEvery heartbeat is a reminder of the life we are privileged to live. We should not wait for a cardiac crisis to begin caring for our hearts; prevention must become a daily commitment,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n
