The indefinite Dharna\/Morcha demanding official language status for Punjabi in Jammu & Kashmir entered its sixth consecutive day in Jammu, with the campaign witnessing a significant expansion of support from farmers\u2019 organisations, Gurdwara management committees, religious and social bodies, community organisations and district-level committees across J&K and Punjab.<\/p>\n
The growing support came as representatives from Punjab and different parts of Jammu & Kashmir extended written and organisational support to the demand, while the organisers announced that the next phase of the movement would include wider mobilisation, participation of jathe from outside J&K and democratic outreach to the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers of different States, Union Ministers, MPs and MLAs.<\/p>\n
Addressing the gathering, Taranjit Singh Tony, Chairman, Gurdwara Rani Talab, Digiana, said the support coming from different sections had strengthened the demand and demonstrated that the issue was no longer confined to one organisation or locality. He appealed to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the J&K Cabinet and all 90 MLAs to come forward and support a resolution seeking official recognition for Punjabi during the forthcoming Winter Session of the J&K Legislative Assembly.<\/p>\n
A major show of solidarity came from the Anndata Kissan Union, Punjab, led by its President Angrej Singh Sandhu, along with Hardev Singh Grewal, Jagtar Singh Rai, Tajinder Singh, Pavitar Singh, Jasvinder Singh Khalsa and Jagtar Singh Lota. Angrej Singh Sandhu said the demand for recognition of Punjabi was a legitimate linguistic and cultural issue that deserved serious consideration through democratic and constitutional institutions. He said the participation of farmer representatives from Punjab demonstrated that the issue had significance beyond geographical boundaries and reflected a wider concern for protecting Punjabi language, literature and cultural heritage.<\/p>\n
The campaign also received support from prominent Sikh community representatives, including Manjit Singh, Surjit Singh, General Secretary, DGPC, Balwinder Singh, Vice President, DGPC, Gurmeet Singh, Harbaksh Singh, Virender Singh and Gurmukh Singh. Various district committees of Reasi and Samba also extended their support and submitted letters backing the demand for official recognition of Punjabi.<\/p>\n
Written support has further come from Gurdwara management committees. Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Ward No. 1, Bhor Camp, Jammu, conveyed its solidarity with the demand for Punjabi to be granted official language status. Similarly, Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Barjalla, Raipur Satwari, Jammu, formally extended its support to the campaign and highlighted the historical and cultural importance of Punjabi.<\/p>\n
In another significant development, the All J&K Dalit Chetna Manch; All Jammu and Kashmir Shri Guru Ravidas Sabha, H.O. Krishna Nagar, Jammu; Shri Mata Vaishno Devi E-Rickshaw E-Auto Union, Jammu & Kashmir, have also submitted written support for official status to Punjabi, stressing the language\u2019s widespread usage and importance to the linguistic and cultural identity of the region.<\/p>\n
Tony further announced that the campaign would now be expanded on a wider scale, with jathe and delegations from Punjab and other parts of the country expected to join the Jammu Morcha. He made it clear that the proposed mobilisation would remain completely peaceful, constitutional and democratic, with the objective of creating awareness and building wider support for the resolution.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe demand is clear \u2014 Punjabi deserves official recognition in Jammu & Kashmir. We are approaching the government through peaceful, democratic and constitutional means. We appeal to the Chief Minister, Cabinet and every MLA to stand with this linguistic and cultural cause and support the resolution in the Winter Session,\u201d Tony said.<\/p>\n
He urged the Sikh Sangat and supporters of Punjabi to remain united and peaceful and continue participating in the indefinite Dharna until the government gives a positive response.<\/p>\n
The organisers maintained that the Morcha would continue to grow through support letters, memoranda, delegations, jathe and democratic outreach across J&K, Punjab and other States. The Day-6 Dharna was attended by members of the Sikh community, representatives of different Gurdwaras, farmer representatives, social activists, scholars, community organisations and supporters of the Punjabi language movement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
