Emphasizing the growing influence of social and environmental factors on cardiovascular health, Head Department of Cardiology GMCH Jammu Dr Sushil Kumar Sharma held a day-long Cardiac awareness-cum-Health Check-up Camp at Ramleela Ground , Channi Himmat, Jammu. The camp aimed to screen individuals at high risk of cardiovascular diseases and educate people about the importance of social determinants of health in preventing heart ailments. The initiative focused on promoting early detection, preventive healthcare and the adoption of heart-friendly habits to reduce the growing burden of cardiovascular diseases.<\/p>\n
While interacting with the people Dr Sushil explained that heart health is shaped not only by biological factors and individual choices but also by the circumstances in which people live, work and grow. Economic insecurity, limited educational opportunities, inadequate healthcare access, unhealthy neighbourhoods, environmental pollution and social isolation can significantly increase cardiovascular risk. People struggling with financial hardship may find it difficult to afford nutritious food, regular medical consultations and essential medicines, while inadequate health literacy can prevent them from recognizing warning signs or understanding the importance of preventive screening. He stressed that equitable access to quality healthcare, safe living environments and reliable health information is essential to ensure that cardiovascular prevention reaches every section of society.<\/p>\n
Explaining the biological mechanisms linking social adversity with heart disease, Dr Sushil said that prolonged exposure to financial stress, discrimination, insecurity and social disadvantage can continuously activate the body’s stress-response systems. Persistent release of stress hormones, including cortisol and catecholamines, may contribute to elevated blood pressure, increased heart rate, disturbed glucose metabolism and impaired immune regulation. Chronic stress may also be associated with inflammation, insulin resistance, unhealthy cholesterol levels and sleep disturbances, collectively increasing the risk of cardiovascular complications. Over time, these interconnected processes can accelerate atherosclerosis, in which fatty deposits accumulate within the arteries, restricting blood flow and potentially resulting in heart attacks and strokes. He added that sustained pressure on the heart may also contribute to heart failure, particularly when other risk factors remain undetected or inadequately controlled.<\/p>\n
Dr Sushil further emphasized that the neighborhood and community environment can either protect or threaten cardiovascular health. The absence of safe walking spaces, parks, affordable fresh food and recreational facilities can discourage physical activity and encourage unhealthy dietary practices. Similarly, pollution, tobacco consumption, excessive salt intake, sedentary behavior and inadequate sleep can compound existing risks. He advocated a comprehensive preventive approach involving regular blood pressure monitoring, blood sugar and cholesterol assessment, balanced nutrition, daily physical activity, adequate sleep, smoking cessation and timely medical consultation. He also underlined the importance of family support, social inclusion and mental well-being in helping individuals sustain healthier behaviors. Healthcare professionals must consider patients’ social and economic circumstances while recommending treatment, ensuring that preventive advice is practical, affordable and accessible.<\/p>\n
Concluding his message, Dr Sushil stated that preventing cardiovascular disease requires a collective effort extending beyond hospitals and individual medical consultations. While early diagnosis, appropriate treatment and regular follow-up remain essential, lasting improvements also depend on healthier communities, stronger public health education, affordable healthcare, improved housing conditions, cleaner surroundings and policies that address social and economic inequalities. He urged people to take responsibility for their heart health by recognizing risk factors early, undergoing periodic health check-ups and making sustainable lifestyle changes. The camp reinforced the message that cardiovascular disease prevention must address both the medical causes of illness and the social conditions that influence them. By integrating clinical care with community participation and supportive public policies, society can work towards reducing cardiovascular inequalities and ensuring healthier hearts for all.<\/p>\n
