With barely two and a half months to go before the Uttarakhand Assembly elections, the state’s pre-election political landscape is becoming more entertaining than an Ekta Kapoor television soap opera, with enough twists, turns and dramatic revelations to rival a Bollywood potboiler.<\/p>\n

While the state continues to grapple with a host of fundamental problems, including unemployment, education, environmental degradation and inadequate healthcare, its political class appears increasingly preoccupied with family feuds, personal relationships, allegations of sleaze, fraud, intrigue, money, murder, corruption and political vendetta. The unfolding drama has provided ample fodder for social media and television debates, often pushing issues of public importance into the background.<\/p>\n

The latest political melodrama began with the continuing demand for justice in the Ankita Bhandari murder case. Civil society organisations and opposition parties have maintained relentless pressure on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, demanding a thorough investigation into the murder of the young woman, who worked at a resort owned by the son of an RSS functionary.<\/p>\n

Ankita was allegedly killed after refusing to provide special services to a VIP guest. Her parents have repeatedly alleged that the unidentified VIP was a senior BJP leader. Following sustained public pressure, the state government ordered a CBI investigation in February 2026. However, the probe has made little visible progress, fuelling further public resentment.<\/p>\n

The controversy resurfaced following the appointment of Dushyant Gautam, who has been linked to allegations surrounding the alleged VIP in public discourse, as Governor of Sikkim. Opposition parties and activists alleged that the appointment was intended to provide him protection from legal action through constitutional immunity. Ankita’s parents, who continue to demand justice, were detained during a protest demonstration at Raj Ghat last night.<\/p>\n

While the BJP and Congress were engaged in a political confrontation over the issue, another controversy erupted when a man approached the police accusing Sonia Anand, a Congress general secretary who has been publicly described as the wife of senior Congress leader Harak Singh Rawat, of cheating him in a property transaction.<\/p>\n

The complainant alleged that Sonia Anand had purchased his property but failed to pay the entire amount. Sonia Anand, however, maintained that the payment had been made to the complainant’s wife and that the dispute was already pending before the Nainital High Court.<\/p>\n

The media coverage of the complaint, particularly the description of Sonia Anand as Harak Singh Rawat’s wife, triggered an unexpected intervention from Deepti Rawat, who described herself as Harak Singh Rawat’s legally wedded wife of several decades.<\/p>\n

In a video message, Deepti objected to Sonia Anand being referred to as Harak Singh Rawat’s wife by the complainant and sections of the media. She threatened legal action, asserting that such references had deeply hurt her family and that she was the legitimate wife of the senior Congress leader.<\/p>\n

The response was swift. Sonia Anand asserted that her relationship with Harak Singh Rawat was based on mutual respect and dignity and that nobody could take that away from her. Subsequently, photographs of Harak Singh Rawat with Sonia Anand and their two children began circulating widely on social media, further intensifying the controversy.<\/p>\n

Even as Harak Singh Rawat, one of Uttarakhand’s most mercurial and controversial political figures, found himself defending his personal affairs, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami fired another political salvo by reviving the controversial ‘unwed mother’ episode involving the Congress leader dating back to 2003.<\/p>\n

The scandal had rocked the then Narayan Dutt Tiwari-led Congress government when Harak Singh Rawat was accused of fathering a child with an Assamese woman, Indira Deuri, alias Jenny. The controversy created a major political uproar and eventually forced Rawat to resign from the Tiwari Cabinet. A CBI inquiry was subsequently ordered.<\/p>\n

Following a DNA examination of the newborn child, the CBI gave Rawat a clean chit, enabling him to return to active politics. He continued to remain a prominent figure in Uttarakhand politics, serving as Leader of the Opposition from 2007 to 2012 and subsequently joining the Vijay Bahuguna Cabinet in 2012.<\/p>\n

In 2016, he crossed over to the BJP along with nine other Congress legislators in an attempt to bring down the Harish Rawat-led Congress government, which had succeeded the Vijay Bahuguna government in 2014. He subsequently served as a Cabinet minister in the BJP governments headed by Trivendra Singh Rawat, Tirath Singh Rawat and Pushkar Singh Dhami between 2017 and 2021.<\/p>\n

However, in another political turnaround, Harak Singh Rawat quit the BJP and returned to the Congress. He was denied a party ticket in the 2022 Assembly elections. Since then, he has emerged as one of the most vocal Congress leaders taking on the BJP government, making him a frequent target of the ruling party’s political attacks ahead of the 2027 elections.<\/p>\n

While Rawat was defending himself by citing the CBI’s clean chit in the 2003 controversy, the appearance of a woman claiming herself as Indira Deuri alias Jenny in a video message last night added another dramatic twist. Expressing resentment over her name being dragged into Uttarakhand’s current political controversy, she announced that she would disclose the entire truth about her ordeal in the state 23 years ago within a day.<\/p>\n

The renewed references to Rawat’s alleged past relationships and personal affairs have become a major talking point on social media, much to the embarrassment of the Congress party.<\/p>\n

The Congress, however, is not alone in facing such uncomfortable controversies. The ruling BJP has also found itself embroiled in an extraordinary personal and political dispute involving Uttarakhand’s Women and Child Welfare Minister Rekha Arya and her husband, Girdhari Lal Sahu.<\/p>\n

In a series of allegations, Rekha Arya accused her husband of fraud and forgery, claiming that he had misrepresented his marital status when they married in 2004. She alleged that Sahu had concealed the fact that he was already married and had subsequently defrauded her of her property and shares in family-owned companies. She also lodged an FIR against him.<\/p>\n

Sahu, on the other hand, levelled counter-allegations against the minister, accusing her of amassing assets worth Rs 210 crore through corrupt practices. He further claimed that he had brought her alleged financial irregularities to the attention of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.<\/p>\n

With Uttarakhand Police reportedly searching for Sahu after he went missing, the controversy eventually reached the Nainital High Court. The court rejected his plea seeking quashing of the FIR, adding another legal dimension to the already sensational dispute.<\/p>\n

Thus, as Uttarakhand inches towards another Assembly election, its political class seems to be offering voters an extraordinary spectacle of personal rivalries, marital disputes, old scandals and fresh allegations. Unfortunately, the issues that should dominate the political discourse \u2014 unemployment, migration, deteriorating educational infrastructure, environmental degradation, healthcare and the economic distress of the hill districts \u2014 appear to have been pushed to the margins.<\/p>\n

The question is whether this seemingly endless political soap opera will continue to dominate the electoral narrative or whether the people of Uttarakhand will eventually demand answers on the real issues confronting the state.
