UCC is unconstitutional, anti-people, anti-minority and anti-women: Indresh Maikhuri

Lal Kuan, March 12

A training workshop of Uttarakhand state unit  Communist Party of India ( Marxist –Leninist) workers on the “Uniform Civil Code (UCC)” implemented by the state BJP government was organised at the party office, Deepak Bose Bhawan, Car Road, Bindukhatta. Indresh Maikhuri, State Secretary of CPI(ML) as a chief trainer of the workshop  spoke at length about the recently implemented Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

CPIM State Secretary Comrade Indresh Maikhuri said that the recent law made by the Dhami government in the name of Uniform Civil Code (UCC) was ‘unconstitutional’, ‘anti-people’, ‘anti-minorities’ and ‘anti-women’ And the  people of Uttarakhand should boycott it completely.

He further said that, there is a provision in the constitution that when the Uniform Civil Code is made, it will be for the whole country. But the BJP/RSS ruling dispensation in a bid to show their anti-minority hate and anti-women intentions, has imposed this law in Uttarakhand, which would  create problems for every section of the society.

He predicted that the way marriage registration has been made compulsory for everyone, it will force all the people of Uttarakhand to stand in queues for the next six months.

The CPI(ML) state secretary said that the kind of personal information sought for the registration of marriage, divorce, live-in is not only a violation of people’s right to privacy but is also an unwanted interference in people’s lives by the police and the government. “This entire exercise is an attempt to set up a police surveillance system,” he added.

Commenting on the modern trend live –in relations where couples choose to live together independently instead of living in the formal bond of marriage, Indresh Maikhuri  said that the UCC has made live-in relationship a crime. “There is an attempt to make the one-day uproar by right-wing groups on Valentine’s Day against youngsters as a permanent permit for moral policing of live-in relationships,” he said.

Comrade Indresh said that BJP’s prejudice towards minorities was visible as none from the minority community was nominated in the committee that was formed for the UCC and was an indicator of the expression of the prejudice of the BJP’s Pushkar Singh Dhami government. “The progressive part of the religious laws of minorities has also been canceled and all their traditions of marriage etc., which are not anti-women, have also been cancelled,” he said.

The fire branc young Communist leader said that the claims of the Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami that the UCC is for giving rights to minority women was completely hollow. “The party which celebrated the release of rapists of Bilkis Bano in Gujarat from jail  and still claiming to be well wishers of Muslim women is sheer hypocrisy.

Comrade Maikhuri further charged that the silence of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on the involvement of BJP leaders in crimes against women in Uttarakhand is enough to expose his claims of being pro-women.

While conducting the workshop, CPI ML Nainital District Secretary Dr Kailash Pandey said that the way the BJP government and the affiliated organizations of the Sangh are working to advance the communal agenda through the Uniform Civil Code, it will only intensify the social division, bringing the  credibility of this law under question.

CPI ML State Secretary Indresh Maikhuri, District Secretary Dr Kailash Pandey, Nain Singh Koranga, Vimala Rauthan, Kishan Baghri, Nirmala Shahi, Lalit Matiyali, Chandan Ram, Govind Singh Jina, Prabhat Pal, Bishan Dutt Joshi, Dheeraj Kumar, Pani Ram, Anand Danu, Amba Dutt Bachkheti, Manoj, Trilok Singh Danu, Rajendra Shah and Vishal Prajapati, Karishma amongst others were present in the training workshop.
