UPCL has reduced line losses with unprecedented improvement in the power distribution sector

Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) has made unprecedented progress in the power distribution sector under the able leadership of Chief Minister  Pushkar Singh Dhami and guidance of Meenakshi Sundram Secretary (Energy).

In the past few years, the demand for power supply in the state of Uttarakhand has increased by more than 10 percent and to meet the demand, UPCL has taken important steps to establish a strong power distribution system as well as to improve operational and business efficiency. To meet  the ever-increasing demand, UPCL has further strengthened the distribution sector in the last few years, in which new sub-stations have been constructed and new lines have been installed across the state. Along with this, in the year 2023-24, about 4350 distribution transformers have been installed to maintain power balance on all the feeders across the state.

Many schemes of Government of India such as Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) ‘s Advanced Metering Infrastructure Service Provider (AMISP)  and Loss Reduction  Schemes are currently operational and the main objective of these schemes is to reduce power losses and ensure high quality power supply to the consumers.

UPCL, under the leadership of Managing Director Anil Kumar Yadav , has improved its billing and collection efficiency and in the last 5 years, has brought about a record reduction of about 5.8 per cent in ITR losses (from 20.44 per cent in 2019-20 to 14.64 per cent in 2023-24), which is commendable. The Managing Director has informed that reducing the AT&C losses is important for improving the financial condition of the Discom and due to reduction in losses, there is increase in revenue, technical advancement, balance in demand-supply as well as savings are achieved due to reduction in losses, due to which electricity can be made available to consumers at cheaper rates. In future also, installation of smart metering system by UPCL, use of technologies like SCADA and RT-DAS system etc. will also play an important role in reducing power losses.

The details of T&D and AT&C losses incurred by UPCL for the last 03 years are as follows:-

In the Financial year 2021-22, the T&D losses were 14.15 per cent while AT&C losses were 15.75 per cent. In the year 2022-23, the T&D losses were 14.08 per cent while AT&C losses were 15.25 per cent. In the year 2023-24, the T&D losses  were 13.89 per cent while  AT&C losses were 14.64 per cent.
