Despite rain havoc ‘Kailash Mansarowar yatra’ running smoothly

Despite havoc played by monsoon rains and resultant landslides, the ‘Kailash Mansarowar yatra’ from Lipulekh pass on indo-China border continued unabated due to quick response by Border Roads Organisations (BRO) teams in clearing the road on the way.
“The yatra this year is almost completed as 8th batch returned to Berinag camp from base camp today. The 9th batch will return to Indian soil on Aug 19 and the last and 10th batch of this year’s ‘Kailash Mansarowar yatra’ will return at Lipulekh pass on August 23, “said Dhan Singh Bisht, in charge of base camp of Yatra at Dharchula.
Meanwhile, a total of 23 motor roads including 2 border roads, one state highway and 20 village roads were closed after continue rainfall from last three days in the district.
“Border road from Tawaghat to Gunji was closed today at 5 am due to accumulation of heavy debris on road at Tawaghat, while a state highway, from Thal to Berinag road was also closed due to landslides. Another border road from Thal to Munsiyari was closed at La jhekla from last four days, “said Bhupendra Singh Mahar, District Disaster Management Officer (DDMO),Pithoragarh.
Major rivers in the district, namely Gori and Saryu are on rise while river Kali has remained steady at Dharchula due to less rains in it’s catchment areas of high Himalayan region. “While the efforts to open closed roads are on war footing, the people residing by riverside have been warned of the overflowing rivers,” said the DDMO.
