AI to Reduce Waste in Food Processing: International Conference starts at Graphic Era
Dehradun, October 9: Scientists from India and abroad are deliberating on new technologies to improve food processing, safety and nutrition at Graphic Era. A two-day international conference has begun to explore these areas.
The international conference on Smart Innovations in Food Processing, Safety and Nutrition began today at Graphic Era Deemed University. At the inaugural ceremony, the chief guest, Director of the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CSIR-CFTRI), Mysuru, Dr. Giridhar Parvatam, said that modern technologies and Artificial Intelligence can help improve food quality, prevent wastage and increase farmers’ income. He emphasized the need to ensure food safety from farms to markets and make new technologies accessible to farmers.
President of the Association of Food Scientists and Technologists (India), Dr. Parmjit S. Panesar, said that waste generated by the food industry can be transformed into valuable bioproducts. This would not only reduce food waste but also promote better resource utilization and environmental conservation.
Vice Chancellor of Graphic Era Deemed University, Dr. Narpinder Singh, said that traditional food systems must also be promoted alongside new technologies to ensure food quality, nutrition and safety.
The two-day international conference will feature discussions on food safety, nutrition, food quality, the impact of microplastics in packaged food, converting food waste into valuable products, and developing new plant-based protein alternatives. Scientists, researchers and experts from six countries, including China, South Korea and Russia, and seven Indian states will present their research papers and share practical solutions to challenges faced by the food industry. Professor at Seoul University, South Korea, Dr. Hyunook Kim, is also participating in the conference.
The international conference has been jointly organized by the Department of Food Science and Technology and the Department of Hospitality Management at Graphic Era, in collaboration with the Association of Food Scientists and Technologists (India), the Anusandhan National Research Foundation and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The programme was attended by Pro Vice Chancellor Dr. Santosh S. Sarraf, Registrar Dr. Naresh Kumar Sharma, Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology Dr. Vinod Kumar, Head of the Department of Hospitality Management Dr. Amar Dabral, other faculty members and students.
