Jeewan  Joshi’s achievement exceptional despite odds

The results of Uttarakhand State Board Examination for class 10^th and  12^th brought joy to the successful candidates hailing from different sections of the society but the achievement of Jeevan Joshi, a poor boy who passed the matriculation examination and was placed in the merit list has been different.

Amongst those who despite financial handicaps and other problems made it to the merit list, the struggle of Jeevan Joshi, who was included in the merit list, was exceptional. Jeevan Joshi, son of a poor farmer lost his father during his examination.

Facing financial problems due to medical condition of his father, he lost him on the day of his social science examination. Showing tremendous courage and determination, he performed the last rites of his father  and then went to school to appear for his social science examination.

His forebearance showed result when he was placed at 21st position in the merit list of the state by securing 94.80 percent marks in the high school examination.

Jeevan’s father Tara Dutt Joshi, a resident of Pothing, a remote village in Kapkot tehsil of Bageshwar district of Kumoan  was diagnosed with cancer while on job. After undergoing treatment for almost two years, he passed away during Jeevans’ board examination this year. The day he passed away, Jeewan had his social science examination. The stress of the examination and the mourning of the father’s death could not dampen his determination to excel. He first performed the last rites of his father and later took the social science paper. He got the highest score of 98 marks in this question paper given in a sad atmosphere. Jeevan was the only student in the district to get his name in the merit list of state government schools by scoring 94 marks in Sanskrit, 88 in Hindi, 97 in Mathematics, 97 in Science and 93 in English in the examination. After his glorious achievement, he has to still struggle hard since he has to go out of his  village for intermediate studies, as his family is in dire financial condition.
