‘Adi Kailash yatra’, will be closed for winter months this season as the inner passes, to enter the region will not be issued for pilgrims from December 1, this year.

“We have decided to cease issuing inner line passes for Yatra from December 1,2025 keeping in mind the reports from Border Roads Organisations (BRO) that the lakes around ‘Adi Kailash’ have started freezing and the route to yatra has also become difficult due to winter frost on the road leading there,” said Jitendra Verma, SDM, Dharchula, who is the authority that issues inner line passes for the Yatra.

“Besides these reasons, some other reasons also compelling us to cease issuing inner line passes including migration of host villagers to lower valleys for winter and fewer applications being received for passes,” said the SDM. The issuing of inner line passes was ceased on November 15, last year.

‘Adi Kailash yatra’, began from 1981 simultaneously with the resumption of ‘Kailash Mansarowar yatra’, and got a boost in the year 2023, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the region. “The ‘Adi Kailash yatra’, that used to witness approximate of 2000 pilgrims per year from 1991, got boost with his visit leading to visit of over 28000 pilgrims last year and 36461 pilgrims this year till date,” said the SDM.

According to the SDM, the construction of motor road up to Jolingkong by BRO has great contribution in increasing the number as the 9 days pilgrimage from Pithoragarh to Jolingkong initially, could now be completed in only two days due to excellent road connectivity constructed by BRO up to ‘Adi Kailash’.
