Complementary, Not Competition, Is the Foundation of Healthcare: Padma Shri Prof. Dr. B. K. S. Sanjay

Dehradun, July 12

A seminar on “The Role of Physiotherapy in Physical Health,” was jointly organized by Sanjay Orthopedic Spine & Maternity Centre and SHEWA Society Jakhan, Dehradun.

Padma Shri Prof. Dr. B. K. S. Sanjay, President of AIIMS Guwahati, emphasized that no system of medicine should be viewed as a competitor to another, but rather as complementary in providing the best possible care to patients. He urged doctors and physiotherapists to work with cooperation and mutual respect, placing patients’ welfare above all else. Referring to Buddhist philosophy, he said that a person’s thoughts shape their personality and stressed the importance of respecting all systems of medicine instead of creating negative perceptions about any discipline.

Dr. S. N. Singh, Orthopedic Surgeon and President of the Uttarakhand Orthopaedic Association, highlighted that physiotherapists must clearly understand the appropriate indications for physiotherapy. He emphasized that, wherever clinically indicated, physiotherapy should begin from the first day after an injury to promote faster recovery and improved outcomes.

Main speaker Dr. Gaurav Sanjay, Spine Surgeon, spoke on the critical role of early physiotherapy in patients with fractures, nerve injuries, and paralysis. He explained that timely surgery, structured rehabilitation, and scientifically planned physiotherapy significantly improve recovery and functional outcomes. He also stressed the importance of counselling patients regarding the expected duration of recovery.

The seminar was attended by a large number of physiotherapy students and healthcare professionals. Participation certificates were presented to all attending physiotherapy students. The organizers thanked the speakers and participants and reaffirmed their commitment to promoting evidence-based physiotherapy and interdisciplinary healthcare through similar educational programmes.
