Over 85 km long portion of 150 km long all weather road from Tanakpur to Pithoragarh (NH 9) will have hotmix surface status by last month of this year, as a sum of Rs 85 crore has been approved by union government for the work.
“The work to hotmix the surface the road will be started after monsoon rains ends. We are these days looking for a suitable place to install the hotmix plant near the road,” said Neelam Kala, an engineer of NH.
After the road surface gets hot mixed, the efficiency of vehicles plying on it will be increased as well as the time taken by vehicles to either end of the road will also be saved.” The smooth and pothole free road could not only give fast and smooth transportation to this border district but also increase tourism activities by making it accidents free as well,” said the NH officer.
The Tanakpur to Pithoragarh, all weather road, a part of ‘Chardham project’ sanctioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016, was constructed at a total of Rs.1408 crore by Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India.
Due to continuous landslides on road after it’s completion as all weather road, the ministry sanctioned another project to make it’s slopes safe to check sudden landslides during monsoon, but it could not check the landslides even after that.” The ministry has recently approved a new project of Rs 200 crore approximately to check newly surveyed 30 slopes which are prone to landslides on the road,” said Neelam, the NH engineer.
