The First AIIMS Guwahati Hip Conclave 2026 was inaugurated on Saturday at AIIMS Guwahati by Prof. (Dr.) Bhupendra Kumar Singh Sanjay, President, AIIMS Guwahati, in the presence of the Director, Professor Puranik, Deans, Heads of Departments, faculty members, eminent orthopaedic surgeons and delegates from various institutions.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Dr. Sanjay urged surgeons to follow what he described as his DRAFT Principle:
“DO RIGHT AT THE FIRST TIME, BECAUSE REPAIR AND REDO ARE COSTLY AFFAIRS.”
He said that this principle applies not only to hip replacement or surgery, but to every profession and almost every aspect of life. However, its importance is particularly significant in surgery, where an unsuccessful procedure may require another operation, resulting in additional pain, expense, risk and recovery time.
In hip replacement, he emphasised the importance of correct diagnosis, appropriate patient selection, proper implant selection, meticulous planning, precise surgical technique and adequate rehabilitation and follow-up.
Prof. Dr. Sanjay noted that two major factors affecting the longevity of an artificial hip are infection and loosening, particularly aseptic loosening. He stressed that the objective should not simply be a successful operation today, but a hip that continues to function effectively for many years.
He further shared his experience of performing hip replacements in patients ranging from 98 to 26 years of age, reiterating that “Age is no bar” when the patient’s overall physiological and functional status is appropriately assessed.
Addressing young surgeons, he also introduced his BKS Key to Success principle—Behaviour, Knowledge and Skill, emphasising: “Behaviour comes first, followed by Knowledge and Skill.”
He expressed hope that the First AIIMS Guwahati Hip Conclave would promote excellence in hip surgery and strengthen academic collaboration, research and innovation in the Northeast.
