The Govind Ballabh Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment (GBPNIHE), based at Katarmal in Almora district, has secured a patent registration from the Government of India’s Patent Office for a ‘portable tree diameter and plot measurement device’. The design was registered on October 8 under Design No. 513994-001.

The device is expected to prove useful in forest research and ecological studies across the Himalayan region, said institute director Dr Indra Datt Bhatt.

“The instrument combines tree circumference measurement and quadrat establishment in a single portable tool. It has been designed to ensure accuracy, repeatability and efficiency,” Dr Bhatt said.

According to the director, by integrating multiple field functions into a single instrument, the device reduces the need for separate measuring tools and simplifies data collection for researchers engaged in forest inventory, biodiversity assessment and long-term ecological studies across the Himalayan region.

The device was developed through a collaborative effort involving researchers and scientists from the institute, including Dr Indra Datt Bhatt, Dr Asheesh Pandey, Dr Ashutosh Kumar, N. Parihar and Prem Ranjan, he added.
