Dr. J.P. Chandra famous botanist known as ‘Poplar man’ no more

Famous Botany scientist Dr. J. P. Chandra, known as ‘Poplar man” who has been associated with Graphic Era University since its inception, passed away  today. He was considered to be the major source of inspiration for the foundation of Graphic Era inspiration and his demise sent a shock wave in the Graphic Era fraternity.

Dr. Chandra was a resident of Pauri district was living at Rudrapur for the last few decades.  Dr. J. P. Chandra (82)  developed several species of poplar and eucalyptus by introducing new technologies and cloning and held patents for around 121 such species. He is also known for bringing a revolutionary change in forestry and developing advanced nurseries. He brought new technologies of forestry in India from Israel. Dr. Chandra was the member of Graphic Era Hill University’s Board of Management and a founder member of Vimko company. He gave his services in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh forest departments and after his long services in the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, he worked at Pantnagar Agricultural University as a professor of Horticulture there. He then joined Vimco and conducted researches on new species of poplar plants. A few years ago he was awarded with the Doctorate degree by Graphic Era Deemed University for his remarkable contribution in the field of forestry.

He was admitted to hospital after suffering a head injury at his home. As his condition deteriorated he was brought to Dehradun for treatment. He took his last breath here, yesterday evening. His final rites were held at Haridwar today. Graphic Era Group of Institutions’ Chairman Dr. Kamal Ghanshala, Vice Chairperson Mrs. Rakhi Ghanshala, Dr. Chandra’s younder brother V. K. Chandra, Govind Chandra, family members, Vice Chancellor of Graphic Era Deemed University Dr. Narpinder Singh, Vice Chancellor of Graphic Era Hill University Dr. Sanjay Jasola and hundreds of people from Rudrapur, Pauri Garhwal and Dehradun bid him farewell. Dr. Chandra’s demise has left a deep impact on Graphic Era institutions. Dr. Kamal Ghanshala described his death as an irreparable loss at a condolence meeting held in the university.
