Detention of Sonam Wangchuk  and his co-padyatris condemned

Dehradun, Oct 1

The detention of Sonam Wangchuk who has been leading a peaceful march to the national capital by delhi police has been condemned by social and political organisations.

Indresh Maikhuri, secretary of the Uttarakhand Unit of CPI(ML) in a statement condemned the arrest of Sonam Wangchuk by Delhi police and termed it highly undemocratic and deplorable. He demanded that all the Yatris along with Sonam Wangchuk should be released immediately so that they could go Gandhi Samadhi on Gandhi Jayanti on Oct 2 as planned.

He said that it was an irony that Sonam Wangchuk who has been leading a peaceful padyatra to highlight the problem being faced by the Himalayan and the residents communities have been detained while a rape accused Ram Rahim has been released.

Similarly, ‘People for Himalaya’ in a statement also condemned the detention of Sonam Wangchuk. The statement said, “on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti we are issuing this statement at the deplorable conditions of the Indian democrac. It is now clear that no matter how peaceful your dissent is and no matter how much patriotism you show for the country, the State will make blatant use of power against the most gentle of citizens in order protect the interests of the corporates who want to grab the resources of regions like the Himalaya. The wrongful detention of the contingent of peacefully marching Ladakhis led by Sonam Wangchuk at Singhu border last night is adequate proof of this allegiance and nexus. It is a highly condemnable act by the Delhi Police and the Central Government. The yatris have been walking for a month starting from Leh on 1st September 2024 with clear demand for 6th Schedule and State hood for Ladakh to protect the ecological, socio-economic and cultural security and rights of the trans Himalayan region.”

“We support this demand and call for the immediate release of the peaceful citizens of tribal and minority community of Himalayan broader lands. We appeal to all democratic and people’s organisations to extend solidarity through statements and direct action in support of Ladakh, the Himalaya and the democracy of India”.
