Veterans initiative to spread message of safe and clean Himalayas

‘Humbir’, an organisation of veterans of the Army, Navy and Air Force, has launched an initiative to spread awareness about protecting and cleaning the Himalayan region. As part of the initiative, nine veteran defence personnel are undertaking a 500-km run from Dharchula in Pithoragarh district to Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh.
Carrying the message “Fit Citizen, Clean Himalaya and Strong India,” the veterans have taken up the task of raising awareness about the rapidly deteriorating environment of the Himalayan region and the need to protect its fragile ecosystem.
“The veterans have come up with this initiative to make the Himalayan environment cleaner, healthier and sustainable. It is essential to make residents of the region aware of the rapidly degrading environment and the need to protect it,” said Rakesh Chand, spokesperson for ‘Humbir’.
According to the spokesperson, the nine veteran athletes are scheduled to reach Bareilly on September 4. “They started their run from the Adi Kailash region and are now making their way towards Bareilly to spread the message of environmental conservation,” he said.
The 10-day initiative began in Dharchula, where the veterans interacted with local ex-servicemen communities and students of Army schools. “The interaction was aimed at sharing the spirit of protecting the Himalayan region and encouraging people, particularly the younger generation, to contribute towards preventing environmental degradation,” the Humbir spokesperson said.
