A 20-member team of the Kumaon Scouts of the Indian Army has completed a 55-km one-way trekking and traversing expedition from Dharchula to the Nanda Devi base camp in Munsiyari in 15 days, negotiating difficult mountain terrain and adverse weather conditions in this remote Himalayan region, Army sources said.
The expedition, organised from September 17 to October 2, covered high-altitude Himalayan terrain, including stretches reaching 18,300 feet, according to an Army press note issued on Saturday.
“The team reached the Nanda Devi base camp on October 2 after traversing difficult terrain, including mountain stretches at altitudes of up to 18,300 feet,” the press note said.
The expedition was undertaken with the twin objectives of promoting adventure and strengthening community outreach in remote and far-flung areas of the border region along the India-China frontier.
As part of its outreach programme, the team also spread awareness among local residents about the need to protect the fragile Himalayan ecology. It also addressed health-related concerns and provided medical assistance to villagers in remote areas along the route, the Army said.
