Meteorological device hung with ballon found in Pithoragarh

Pithoragarh police has seized a probable meteorological scientific device hung with a ballon in a forest of village Jakh Pant, a day before, and sent it to Bareilly office of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) for identification, Pithoragarh SP Lokeswar Singh said.
Meanwhile, a statement issued by Director, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Dehradun said that the said device was launched by the Dehradun office at 4.30 am on March 3, 2024 for getting weather data and is totally harmless.
“The device seems is be used probably by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) was traced by a villager, Mahesh Chandra Pant of Jakh Pant village, some 15 km from district headquarter. The device was hung with a ballon that came down after the ballon burst in the sky,” said Lokeshwar Singh. The SP said that the device is Korean manufactured and hung with a ballon.
The police has sent the device to IMD office Bareilly for identification.” We have also shared the information with SSB and ITBP, the para military forces deputed at Indo-Nepal and Indo-China borders along the district to get more information about the device,” said the SP.
The police say that such devices are generally used by IMD Bareilly unit or DRDO to get information on weather pattern.” The purpose of the device could be ascertained after the report from IMD office Bareilly ,” said SP.
