Smart meters at homes and distribution transformers by UPCL harbinger of smart energy future in Uttarakhand
Dehradun , Nov 13
UTtarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) has started installing smart meters at consumer homes as well as distribution transformers and feeders across the state thereby improving efficiency, reliability and transparency in the power distribution system. In the evolving scenario of power distribution, smart meters are playing a vital role in distribution transformers and feeders.
The Installation of smart meters not only provides better services to consumers but also enables UPCL to better manage its resources. Under the RDSS scheme, UPCL has installed meters at about 16 lakh consumer homes across the state as well as smart meters are being installed on a total of 59,212 distribution transformers and 2602 feeders to improve power distribution. The work of installation of smart meters is being done expeditiously by UPCL, under which till date smart meters have been installed on a total of 760 distribution transformers and 1210 feeders by the implementing agencies across the state, which would provide the benefits of real-time energy measurement since smart meters provide accurate, real-time data on energy consumption, allowing users to track consumption on distribution transformers and feeders and make informed decisions. The smart meters are able to transmit data makes effective remote monitoring and management of energy resources possible. The smart meters help in optimizing load distribution in the network, thereby reducing pressure on transformers and feeders and proving effective in reducing self and maximum load. With advanced monitoring capabilities, smart meters can quickly identify faults or abnormalities in the system, allowing for quick response and maintenance and helping to prevent outages.
As an integral part of the smart grid, smart meters enhance the ability to incorporate renewable energy sources, leading to a more sustainable and robust energy infrastructure. Energy distribution networks can achieve greater efficiency, reliability and stability with the installation of smart meters. Anil Kumar Yadav, Managing Director, UPCL apprised that further progress towards the installation of smart meters is not only a solution to the current challenges but also a step towards sustainable energy future. “As we move towards a smart energy future, these innovations will help redefine the way we consume and manage electricity,” he added.
