Golf ball size hails damage windscreen of vehicles, destroy crops in Pithoragarh

Windscreens of more than 36 cars and other vehicles were damaged along with damage to vegetable crops following a hailstorm in Pithoragarh district on Thursday. The hails the size of golf balls caused widespread damaged to newly planted saplings of monsoon vegetables of bottle gourd, ridge gourd, cucumber and pumpkin. The district witnessed hails which weigh nearly 200 grams each in Pithoragarh and surrounding areas last evening.
“The 15 minutes hailstones followed by slight rain from 3 pm onwards last evening caused damaged to farmers who have planted monsoon vegetables, ” said Godhan Singh Bisht, a vegetable farmer in Gangolihat region of the district.
“It was first such hailstorm that was not expected by farmers in the district. The hailstrom destroyed vegetable crops and fruits in Pithoragarh, Gangolihat, Askot, Kanàlichina and Jajerdeval areas of the district “We have demanded compensation from administration as our saplings of tomato, beans and capsicum crops have been fully damaged in the hailstones yesterday,”said Chandra Ballabh Punetha, a vegetable farmer in Gadan area of Pithoragarh district.
