Kiran Rao in Munsiyari for screening of her film ‘Lapata Ladies’

Kiran Rao, film producer, director, script writer and former wife of famous actor Aamir Khan is staying with her three member team at a home stay in Sarmoli village near Munsiyari town.

“We have reached here to find atmosphere to write a script on which our future film could be based,” said Tanaji, manager of ‘Kindle Pictures’, a production company, jointly owned by Kiran Rao and Tanaji.

According to Mallicka Virdi, the host of Kiran Rao in Munsiyari, the film ‘Lapata Ladies’, was screened during ‘Himalayan Kala Sutra’ festival held in Munsiyari from May 16 to 26 this year.

“Today, (on June 2) we are organising a workshop on story telling modes in rural areas of the country. It is being co-organised jointly by ‘Himalayan Media Hub’ and Kindle production jointly and Kiran Rao and her team is participating in the seminar today,” said Mallicka Virdi.

‘Lapata Ladies’, a recent film directed by Kiran Rao was released on Netflix. It is second film by Rao after she produced ‘Dhobi Ghat’ in 2011.”We are in search of a new script to produce a new film and for that purpose, we are staying in Munsiyari and after staying 3 days here, will go to Ranikhet in Almora for another 3 days’ stay,” said Tanaji.

Mallicka Virdi, the host of Kiran Rao in Munsiyari said that Rao was invited for a cultural festival ‘Himal Kala Sangam’ last month but she could not reach then. ” Now, we have invited her on screening of her film “Lapta Ladies’,” said Mallicka.

Kiran Rao said that she was impressed by the collective work being done by women of the hills under ‘Himal’ and wanted to meet them personally. “ I am also working on a script and see if we could shoot the film here in future,” she said.

Munsiyari has already witnessed outdoor shooting of a film, produced by Ajit Pal Singh in October 2019.” The 150 member film team had taken my properties on rent for 67 days and shot  most part of the film in my houses and village,” said Raju Pradhan, owner of ‘Rah Stay’, a home stay facility.
