Graphic Era organizes International Conferece on Food wastage
Dehradun, 18 October: Experts at Graphic Era brainstormed on various solutions to deal with the problem of global food wastage.
A two day International Conferece was organized at Graphic Era Deemed University on Food safety and Quality. Today, Former Vice Chancellor of Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai Padmashree Prof. G. D. Yadav addressed the conference as chief guest. He said that hydrogen gas produced by the hydrogenation of biomass is highly useful for agriculture sector and is environment friendly as well. With the help of this technology, globally wasted food can be converted into valuable fuel, chemical and energy. He said that checking the quality of genetically modified food which contributes in fighting food shortage is necessary. For this, the amount of agrochemicals in crops and their side effects should be checked and reduced. Prof. Yadav encouraged students to reduce food wastage.
J. Todd Kuenstner of MAP Ventures, America highlighted his research on Crohn’s disease and said that MAP germs are found in cattle suffering from Microbacterium arium ssp. Paratuberculosis. Same germs are also found in blood and tissues of people suffering from Crohn’s disease. He said that antimicrobial therapy directed against MAP results in significantly great improvement in treatment of Crohn’s disease. Prof. Katsuyoshi Nishinari from Osaka City University, Japan said that the difference between average life and health expectancy is about 10 years. Various researchers have revealed that the nutrients from balanced diet of various countries show similarity to each other but excercise is also important for mental and physical well being.
In the conference, Vice Chancellor Dr. Narpinder Singh said that due to the lack of nutritious and good quality food many children suffer from undernourishment. Plant based protein like chia seeds, lentils, wheat, green leafy vegetables, tofu, etc. should be included in daily food habits. Secretary of Association of Food Scientists and Technologists Dr. Naveen Shivanna inaugurated Dehradun chapter of AFST(I). Dr. SM Aradya from VVIT, Mysuru, Dr. K. Neelkanteshwar Patil from Central Food Technological Institute, Mysuru and Dr. Krishna Kumar Jaiswal from Pondicherry University, Puducherry also addressed the conference on various topics.
A Souvenir was launched today. On the first day, more than 20 paper presentations and more than 55 poster presentations were presented. Dr. Ankita Dobhal and Riya Barthwal hosted the conference. On this occasion, a cultural evening was also organized. The International Conferece was organized by Department of Food Science and Technology. HoD and Convener Dr. Vinod Kumar, Co- Convener Dr. Sanjay Kumar, Organizing Secretary Dr. Bindu Naik, Dr. Arun Kumar Gupta and Er. Bhavna Bisht, Joint Secretary Dr. Ravneet Kaur, HoDs of various departments, researchers, PhD scholars and students were present in the conference.
