Although, the 36 km long “Adi Kailash” route has been updated from Gunji with addition of black surface road and construction of five Bailey bridges on it, there is uncertainty about the start of the winter edition of ‘Adi Kailash yatra’ due to inclement weather conditions.
“We had earlier planned to run winter part of ‘Adi Kailash yatra’ from December 15 this year till January 15, 2025, but due to frequent clouds, unprecedented chill and freezing water at ‘Adi Kailash’ site, the tourism department is having a rethink on it,” said Kriti Chandra Arya, District Tourist Officer, Pithoragarh.
“The winter edition of the yatra, that was planned from November 15, had to be postponed till December 15 due to no snowfall conditions, is now likely to be postponed due to high snowfall situations,”said the DTO.
According to DTO, the winter part of ‘Adi Kailash’ heli yatra include darshan of ‘OM Parvat’ and sacred Kailash peaks from old Lipulekh pass.
Meanwhile, Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has completed work on construction of five Bailey bridges on the 36 km long route from Gunji to Jolingkong and black topping of the road.” Working in adverse weather conditions for over 15 months, our workers and engineers have completed the construction of bridges and black topping of road. The work of improving condition of road between Gunji and Nabhidhang will begin next month,” said Bhawna Chokse, officer of 65 Road Construction Company (RCC) of Border Roads Organisation (BRO).
According to local tour operators, after construction of 5 Bailey bridges on the road, the distance from Gunji to Jolingkong will now be covered in 55 minutes in place of 90 minutes as used to be before.
The “Adi Kailash yatra’, got a boost after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit in October 12 last year. More than 35 thousands pilgrims from across the country from May 7 till November 15 this year participated in the yatra. The heli “Kailash Darshan” plan of tourist department also was ran from April 4 till May 8 this year.
