Anita Thapliyal Sharma, a global leader in autism education and advocacy from USA would lead an Autism Awareness seminar in collaboration with Dr. Jaya Navani, a renowned psychiatrist and consultant at Government Doon Medical College and Hospital, in Dehradun. This seminar, being organized by Doon Nursing Home and Doon Eye Care Center, will take place on June 1, 2025, at 10 AM at Hyatt Centric, Dehradun. It aims to educate parents, teachers, and medical professionals about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), early intervention, and the importance of inclusive education.
This initiative aligns with the efforts of the Uttarakhand Pravasi Cell and the Uttarakhand Government, which aim to leverage diaspora expertise and resources for the state’s development. Anita Thapliyal Sharma recently attended the Uttarakhand Pravasi Divas, where she was honored by the Uttarakhand Government for her exceptional contributions to autism awareness and support.
During her visit, she held discussions with officials from the Education Department regarding the rising number of autism cases and the lack of awareness in the state. Upon their request to sensitize the people of Uttarakhand, she decided to organize this seminar to educate and spread awareness. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological condition that affects a person’s communication, behavior, and social interactions. While the severity varies among individuals, early diagnosis and intervention can significantly improve an individual’s ability to lead an independent life.
In India, awareness and acceptance of autism remain low, leading to late diagnoses and limited access to specialized education and therapies. The number of children diagnosed with ASD has been steadily increasing, with recent studies indicating that 1 in 100 children in India is on the autism spectrum. However, due to stigma and lack of awareness, many cases go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. This seminar aims to bridge this gap by educating stakeholders and fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for individuals with autism.
Anita Thapliyal Sharma, recipient of the Indian Academy Award and the New Jersey Governor’s Award, is an internationally recognized autism coach, educator, and mentor. A mother of two children on the autism spectrum, she has over 20 years of experience in autism intervention and advocacy.
She runs a comprehensive autism intervention program that teaches children all the essential learning skills required for their development while also mentoring parents. Additionally, she leads a nonprofit organization that helps individuals on the autism spectrum become independent and lead fulfilling lives through vocational training, life skills coaching, and advocacy. Her work has gained global recognition, inspiring professionals like Dr. Jaya Navani to take action in Uttarakhand and beyond.
This seminar will bring together experts and stakeholders to address key aspects of autism, including: Early diagnosis and intervention – why timely action is crucial, Therapeutic approaches – Strategies to help autistic children develop essential skills, the role of educators and medical professionals – Creating supportive environments, building an inclusive society – Encouraging acceptance and integration. By bringing together medical professionals, educators, and caregivers, the seminar aims to create a more informed and supportive ecosystem for individuals on the autism spectrum in India particularly in Uttarakhand.
This seminar is a must-attend event for educators, medical professionals, parents, and caregivers who wish to gain a deeper understanding of autism and help build a more inclusive Uttarakhand.
