Reported expansion of lake in Darma valley being examined

After getting information through media that a 600 meters long and 700 meters wide lake, in existence at Dave spot of Darma valley in Dharchula sub- division of Pithoragarh district, is expanding and could pose danger if burst, Pithoraagarh District Magistrate Vinod Goswami has sought more information about the lake from ITBP personnel, who have their camp situated near the said lake.
” Though we have not received any official information about such lake in Darma valley, we have obtaining more information about it from ITBP to find out if the lower elevation situated villages of Darma valley are facing danger due to said expansion of the lake,” said Pithoragarh DM.
MPS Bisht, head of geology department in Garhwal Central University has a day before claimed, quoting satellite imagery between 2014 -2023, that besides the lake in Darma valley, two other lakes, Basudhara and Kedarnath in Chamoli district, are also expanding from last 9 years.
The geologists has also claimed that these lakes are made of loose moraine debris and might burst due to increase in snow melt or high rains.
Pithoragarh District Disaster Management Officer Bhupendra Singh Mahar has said that a disaster management experts team will reach Pithoragarh to find situation of said lake after monsoon.
