The 55th battalion of Sahastra Seema Bal (SSB), guarding the Indo-Nepal border at Jhoolaghat border bridge in the district, today introduced face identification system to identify the people who want to cross the Indo -Nepal border from either side.

“The new system being introduced for the first time at Indo-Nepal border bridge, is being introduced on a trial basis for a months’ time. After trial of the system gets completed, the report will be sent to Director General, SSB ,who will decide if the system would be continued or not,” said Aashish Kumar, Commandant of SSB.

According to the SSB officer, as there are fixed  number of people, who cross border from time to time for their commercial, religious or family works, the system will be very useful to identify their Identity, as they would already be digitalised where as new entries to the border will have their identity put manually into computer.

“The face identification system will also be in touch with DG office through CC cameras, installed at border and every person crossing border will also be under information of DG office,” said the SSB Commandant.

“The system was introduced keeping in mind a large number of pilgrims going to Nepal for the worship of deity ‘Tripura Sundari’, who is worshiped on both sides of the border,” said the SSB officer.

The SSB Commandant said that the face identification system is very smooth and it produces identity of a person in 10 seconds of time while the manual system gets 5 times of that time.” The decision to continue the system will be taken keeping the advises of local traders of Jhoolaghat town.” said the SSB officer.

Yogesh Bhatt, president of Jhoolaghat Vyapar mandal,  has said that as the face identification is fast and efficient in identification, but some apprehensions of privacy violation and misuse of identity are also related with it. We will discuss it with traders and other stake holders on both sides of border and only then will give our advise if the system is permanently installed or manual entry system continue,” said the traders body chief in Jhoolaghat.
