Pithoragarh district tourist department is organising two snow skiing training camp at Khalia top (3500m) of Munsiyari from February 5, as the region has sufficient layers of snow (over 3 feet) due to recent snowfall in the region, informed Kriti Chandra Arya, District Tourist Officer.
“Both the sessions will be of 4 days each having 30 local youths in each camp. The aim of organising skiing training camps is to provide training to local youths, for, they could organise skiing adventure camps for tourists,” said the DTO.
The first camp will be organised from February 5 to 9, while the second camp will be from February 9 to 14. “The camps will be organised at Khalia top and Balanti farm, where the snow deposits are thick,” said the DTO.
Earlier, the department has organised skiing camps in 2024, while the camps could not be organised in 2025 due to lack of sufficient thickness of snow. “After the recent snowfall in Munsiyari, tourists from Delhi, Bangluru, Maharashtra and Gujarat are reaching Munsiyari to play with snow or view snow clad Himalayan peaks,” said the DTO.
The tourists officer said that to organise skiing in Munsiyari for tourists, the region needs an average of 2 to 3 feet dense snow layer from December till March every season.” If more snowfall occurs this month as well, the possibility of organising skiing camps for tourists in March would be ripe. “We need sufficient snow layers till March, but as the snowfall in the Himalayas has reduced to 50 percent. The future of snow games in Himalayan region has also remain uncertain,” said the DTO.
