The annual angling festival, that gets organised every year by tourism department at Pancheswar, in the district, will be organised for 3 days from February 21 to 23 this year, informed Champawat District Magistrate Manish Kumar.
“The festival based on catch and release basis of endangered Himalayan cold water fishes, ‘Golden Mahasheer’ and giant devil Catfish, could be attended by leading anglers from across the country,” said Champawat DM.
The event helps increase eco-tourism and create employment opportunities for local youth through it. “The event being organised from several years by tourism department of the state has helped the Pancheswar region at confluence of Mahakali and Saryu, to emerge as an ideal destination of angling world over, “said Champawat DM.
The presence of Himalayan ‘Golden Mahasheer’ was traced at Pancheswar waters in 1858 by the then British Commissioner Sir Henry Ramsay, who initiated preservation awareness of the cold water fish from that time onwards.
