More than 90 families and students of Government Inter College were stranded near Umachiya sublet of Sobla village in Dharchula sub-division following damage to diversion bridge made on Nakalgar of Umachya village due to heavy rain.
“Besides this, over 15 village roads in the district have been closed due to landslides,” said Bhupendra Singh Mahar, District Disaster Management Officer (DDMO), Pithoragarh.
Harendra Danu, a villager of Umachiya village said that due to damaged diversion bridge, over 25 students studying in GIC Tejam are unable to reach their school.
The departure of first batch of ‘Kailash Mansarowar yatra’ from base camp Dharchula to high altitude camp of Gunji was delayed for over 2 hours due to landslide that stopped the vehicles at six places on the way. “With the quick response of BRO teams, we could transport the first batch from Dharchula to Gunji in time,” said DDMO.
Meanwhile, S.S. Bisht, an assistant engineer of irrigation department said that heavy rains in Nachni area has formed a 1 km long artificial lake on River Ramganga due to heavy landslides caused by rains from Haradiya hill 3 days ago.” Though the water in lake is receding gradually but we have alerted villages situated in lower valley namely Basgun, Cheepa Bhaiskhal and Kabhari to remain alert as the lake can burst suddenly,” said the irrigation department engineer.
