Breastfeeding Effective in Reducing Maternal and Infant Mortality
Dehradun, August 7: Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of AIIMS Rishikesh, Dr. Meenu Singh, said that breastfeeding can become a people’s movement only through the collective efforts of mothers, families, healthcare workers, and society. She said such collective commitment can help reduce maternal and infant mortality while paving the way for a healthier and stronger society.
She was addressing the valedictory ceremony of World Breastfeeding Week at the Graphic Era Institute of Medical Sciences today. Dr. Meenu Singh appreciated the extensive awareness campaigns conducted by the institute throughout the week to promote the importance of breastfeeding.
Guest of Honour, Chief Medical Officer of Dehradun, Dr. Manoj Sharma said that breast milk is nature’s most complete and safest food for an infant, providing optimal nutrition, stronger immunity, and healthy growth.
Throughout the week, a series of programmes were organised, including awareness sessions with new mothers in the maternity ward, public awareness campaigns in the OPD and at the Sahaspur Community Health Centre, Continuing Medical Education sessions, and training programmes for ASHA workers and nursing staff. These initiatives aimed to spread awareness about the importance of breastfeeding, dispel misconceptions, and educate people about maternal and child health.
The programme was organised by the Department of Pediatrics and Neonatology of the Graphic Era Institute of Medical Sciences. The valedictory ceremony was attended by Medical Director of Graphic Era Hospital Dr. Puneet Tyagi, Dean of Graphic Era Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr. Archana Thakur, Medical Superintendent Dr. N. K. Mohindroo, Professor Emeritus and Senior Neonatologist, Surge Admiral Dr. Girish Gupta, Head of Department of Pediatrics Dr. Roopa Dalmia Singh, Professor, of Department of Pediatrics Dr. (Major) Gaurav Mukheeja, along with senior officials, faculty members, doctors, nursing officers, and students.
