‘Pithoragarh Moth Week’ from July 27

The 5th season of ‘Pithoragarh moth week’ aiming at documenting incredible diversity of moths, found in Kumaon Himalayas with intention to preserve these, will be organised from July 27 to August 5 this year. The season will be organised across the Askot wild life sanctuary and some selected places of climatic diversity, Jagdish Bhatt, Director of ‘Wings Foundation’, an organisation working for preserving environment and bio-diversity, said.
“The season will be led by Pithoragarh District Forest Officer (DFO) Ashutosh Singh, and will be run in Askot wildlife sanctuary and areas like Munsiyari, Sera, Madkot, Pithoragarh, and Jhoola ghat regions as these locations represent wide range of elevation, vegetable type and climatic conditions,” said the organiser.
According to Bhatt, this moth week event is part of his NGO’s 10 season butterfly count and 3 season of dragonfly count initiatives. “We aim to generate valuable scientific data and encourage public participation in conserving bio-diversity of Kumaon Himalayas, out of these activities, “said the organiser.
The press release issued by ‘Wings Foundation” says that the moths are most important insects as their many species are nocturnal pollinators helping flowering plants after sunset. “They are also vital in regeneration of native Himalayan vegetation,” said Bhatt.
