Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami today announced that the state government would organise a 100-mile Himalayan endurance ultra-run race every year from May next year to promote adventure sports in the state.
“The race will start from Mana village in the Garhwal region and culminate at Auli via Badrinath and Joshimath,” the Chief Minister said at Gunji in the Adi Kailash region.
Dhami was speaking at an award ceremony organised for the Adi Kailash Ultra Run, where he presented awards to the winners of the 70-km and 42-km races.
“It is not merely a race but also a test of one’s physical endurance, self-confidence, willpower, courage and determination,” the Chief Minister said.
He said the state government was promoting adventure sports to attract more tourists to Uttarakhand.
“We have promoted activities such as river rafting, kayaking, trekking, paragliding and mountain cycling to boost adventure tourism. These activities span the state’s diverse terrain, from its high mountain ranges to the waters of the Ganga in Rishikesh,” Dhami said.
The Chief Minister said adventure sports and tourism activities in border areas were opening up new livelihood opportunities for local residents and strengthening the economies of remote villages.
“Villagers are now returning to their native villages and earning their livelihoods through homestays, working as tourist guides and providing transportation facilities to visitors,” he said.
Dhami added that these initiatives had also contributed to a rise in the number of pilgrims visiting Adi Kailash. According to him, the number of pilgrims stood at 36,500 in 2025 and had increased to 67,000 so far this year.
