Renowned author Ruskin Bond will be the first recipient of the Carbon Justice Award.
The Carbon Justice Award is a special initiative aimed at encouraging efforts dedicated to the conservation and well-being of the Himalayan environment, nature and communities. The award will recognise and encourage individuals, institutions and community initiatives contributing towards a more sustainable, secure and just future for the Himalayas. It will acknowledge notable contributions across diverse fields, including research, education, conservation, technology, community development, public awareness, literature and social work.
Renowned author Ruskin Bond will receive the first Carbon Justice Award. Known for his significant contribution to short stories, novels, poetry and children’s literature, Bond has shared a deep literary connection with the Himalayas and nature. Announcing the award, Chairman of Graphic Era Group of Institutions, Dr. Kamal Ghanshala, said that through his writings, Ruskin Bond has portrayed the mountains, forests, rivers, valleys and people of the Himalayas with remarkable warmth and intimacy, bringing generations of readers closer to nature and the Himalayas. His literature has also strengthened sensitivity towards the Himalayan natural heritage and the need to preserve it. The prestigious award recognises his lifelong literary engagement with the Himalayas and his deep connection with nature.
Chairman of Graphic Era Group of Institutions, Dr. Kamal Ghanshala, said that Graphic Era’s commitment to the sustainable development of the Himalayas and the well-being of its people lies at the heart of this initiative. He said that Graphic Era’s approach is to ensure that education, science, technology, research and innovation go beyond the pursuit of knowledge and contribute meaningfully to society and nature. He said that the progress of the Himalayas cannot be limited to economic or technological development alone; the well-being of its people and the conservation of its environment and natural resources are equally essential. Education, innovation and sustainable development, he said, must form the strong foundation for a brighter future for the Himalayas. For him, serving the Himalayas is not merely a responsibility, but a lifelong commitment towards its nature, communities and future generations. He said that the Carbon Justice Award has been instituted with this vision, to recognise and encourage significant efforts towards the conservation of the Himalayas and a better and more equitable future for its people.
Appropriate Technology India (ATI)’s longstanding work with the environment, appropriate technology and communities living in mountainous regions also provides a meaningful foundation to the direction and objectives of the initiative. Chair Professor at Graphic Era’s Centre for Himalayan Studies, prof. S.P. Singh has been a significant inspiration for the initiative through his long-standing research and contribution to Himalayan ecology and conservation.
