He had been professor and head of orthopaedics department in Patna Medical College, Director of Bihar Health Services and Chairman of ‘Yojna Aayog’. Apart from several awards, he was honoured with the country’s third highest civilian award ‘Padma Bhushan’ in 1971 by the Government of India for his outstanding medical work.

Dr.  B. Mukhopadhyay is a prestigious oration in the field of orthopaedic surgery which is given to a well-known orthopaedic surgeon every year by Bihar Orthopaedic Association in his memory.  This year,‘Padma Shri’ Prof. Dr. B.  K. S.  Sanjay from Uttarakhand gave the Padma Bhushan. Dr. B. Mukhopadhyay Oration in Bhagalpur.

Dr. Sanjay said in his oration, “The health of the limbs is as important as that of the heart” since growth of any individual depends upon locomotion. Locomotion is important at every stage of life; however, it is more important in childhood. According to 2011 census 20% of all disabilities are the locomotor disabilities and the main causes of deformity were Polio, Club foot and CP in past.

However, presently, road traffic accidents have taken over all deformities in the recent years. “Any type of disability causes not only physical harm but also mental, economic and social loss. We all need a conducive environment to grow and develop in existing environments and circumstances but disabled people need more. The needs of people with disabilities are the same as those of able person,” he said..

Dr. Sanjay also said that the correction of deformities should be done as soon as possible. The perception of the common people is that children should be operated only when they become mature but sooner the correction, better are the results. During a press conference held on the occasion, Dr. Sanjay said that today young people are becoming victims of spine, knee and shoulder diseases due to gym. He appealed to the young that rather than joining the gym they should start doing their day-to-day domestic and personal work by themselves rather than depending on mothers or maids.

During the conference, Dr. Sanjay also said that if the health of the feet of all of us was not good and we were not walking, then we would not have reached where we have reached today. In other words, those who are not able to walk, will not be able to reach where we have reached. They can only dream and people who walk can not only dream but also can fulfil their dreams. Deformity and disability due to any reason should be rectified as soon as possible because the plants can be straightened easily, not the trees, he added.
