Sundarbani army canteen named after 1948 war hero martyr ‘Vir Chakra’ awardee Deputy Lal

Sunderbani, Feb 7

The 28th infantry brigade of Army has named the Sundarbani CSD canteen in rajouri district of J&K after 1948   martyr L/ Hav Deputy Lal ‘Vir Chakra’ awardee.

At a simple ceremony, the 28 th Infantry Army brigade Sunder Bani  remembered  the first ‘Vir Chakra’ awardee of the area, who was martyred in Nowshera / Rajouri  sector on 15 June 1948  prio to Brigadier Usman .

His photographs and citation of his act of valour & bravery in the battle field and besides a commendation of the first Field Marshal of the Independent India General K M Kariappa were displayed at the canteen.

The next of kin of the martyr and other kith and king along with locals attended the function where Brigade Commander Kapil Taneja was the chief guest.

The martyr  Deputy Lal was bachelor and only 27 years of age and was awarded  the gallantry award posthumously. The award was presented to his younger brother Havaldar Radha Krishan by then Sadr-e- Riyasat of J&K Dr Karan Singh on January 26, 1950.

Expressing gratitude to the army brigade for remembering the martyr, on behalf of the family of the martyr, one of the nephew of the martyr, Ravinder Sharma, a former MLC  and senior Congress Leader said that such an act of honouring it’s martyrs by the army inspires the coming generations. He further said that his entire family will always remain indebted to army and the nation.

He termed it as a proud moment for the army veterans, ex servicemen and entire Sunderbani area along with  the family members of the martyr. Several army officers, prominent citizens and ex-servicemen attended the ceremony.
