Border Roads Orgnisation (BRO) has set a deadline of June 6, 2024, to complete cutting of 66 km long strategically significant border road at Indo-China border in Johar valley of Pithoragarh district, as only one km long hard rock portion is to be cut on the road.
The border roads have already been constructed in other two valleys of this portion of Indo-China border as roads to Lipulekh pass in Vyans valley and road to Tidand border post in Darma valley are already in operation.
“After we finish cutting of a km of hard rock portion between Bugdiyal and Rilgari, the 66 km long border road will be linked with Milam glacier, one of the biggest glacier of Asia,” said Vimal Goswami, Chief Engineer of project Hirak of BRO, that is taking on the project.
A total of eight bailey bridges have been constructed on this 66 km long road.” The pace of construction on the road, that started from the year 2010, speeded up in last two years as we became successful in cutting 7 km long hard portion every year in last two years compared to 2.5 km long portion that used to cut every year before that owing to several factors,” said the BRO officer.
After the 66 km long Munsiyari to Milam road gets constructed, the road connectivity up to border posts at Indo-China border posts of this part of mid sector, will be completed.
The BRO had received appreciation when it completed the 80 km long border road from Ghatiabagar to Lipulekh in Vyans valley of mid sector in the year 2020, that construction enables the Kailash Mansarowar pilgrims to take on road journey up to Lipulekh as well as smooth transportation of security forces to border posts at Indo-China border posts situated in the Vyans valley.
According to local tourists traders in Munsiyari, after the completion of road to Milam the tourists will be able to reach Milam glacier within four hours.” Till date a tourist has to plan 9 days tour to view Milam glacier that includes 4 days up and 4 days down journey and one days stay near camps of glacier,” said Puran Pandey, a hotel owner in Munsiyari.
