GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment, Almora to host Himalayan Conservation conclave

With an aim to develop a strategy for Indian Himalayan region by 2047 in alignment with India’s ‘Vikshit Bharat 2047 vision to transfer India into a developed and sustainable economy, the GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment at Katarmal Kosi in Almora is hosting a three days conclave on the topic, “Environmental conservation and sustainable socio-economic growth”, from November 13 to 15 at it’s headquarter at Almora.

“The conclave, co-hosted by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP, Department of Science and Technology (DST0 of Ministry of Forest and Environment (MoFE), Government of India, International Center for Mountain Development, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS), IIT, Roorkee and several other research institutions.  Leading scientists, academician, policy makers, administrators and representatives of NGO’s and communities across Himalayan region from 11 Himalayan states and 2 union territories will participate and discuss issues of environmental conservation, climate change adaptation and sustainable livelihood and regional cooperation,” said Dr. I.D. Bhatt, in charge director of the institution.

“The Himalayan region, globally recognised for its rich biodiversity, culture heritage and ecological significance, is facing increased challenges due to climate change, rapid demographic shift, unsustainable land use practices and problems of glacial retreat, flash floods and water resources depletion. The conclave aims to bring out action strategies to address these pressing issues and to establish a roadmap for sustainable and inclusive growth for Himalayan region,” said Dr I.D. Bhatt

The entire three days conclave will have 21 seasons to discuss six major thematic areas assigned for the conclave. “Besides aiming to revisit, existing action plan for Himalayan region in light of emerging climatic scenario, the conclave also aims to promote eco- system based climate strategies, encourage responsible tourism in the region and support mountain communities through green entrepreneurship and development of value based local products.

It was expected that the outcomes of event would lead to form strategies for managing ground water and land degradation as well as implementing climate change measures and action policies. “Through this conclave, we are aiming to empower Himalayan communities to achieve sustainable livelihood and help update a renewed Himalayan action plan, that could guide the region towards a secure inclusive and sustainable future in wake of emerging challenges to the region,” said Dr I.D.Bhatt.
