President of AIIMS, Guwahati visits outreach centres in Guwahati
Dehradun, March 6
Dr B. K. S. Sanjay, President of All India Institute of Medical Sciences Guwahati, recently visited the institute’s associated rural health centres to review healthcare services and interacted with healthcare workers, patients and interns and Post graduates posted at the health centres. The visit aimed to strengthen the delivery of community-oriented health services and reinforce the importance of primary health care as the foundation of an effective health system.
During the visit, Dr. Sanjay inspected various facilities, interacted with doctors, health workers, and support staff, and reviewed the functioning of outpatient services, preventive health programmes, and community outreach activities. He appreciated the efforts of the healthcare teams who are already working with AIIMS Guwahati team at the grassroots level to deliver essential health services to the surrounding population.
Addressing the staff, Dr. Sanjay emphasized that primary health care is the cornerstone of an efficient and equitable health system. He highlighted that strengthening primary care services helps in early diagnosis, prevention of diseases, and reduction of the burden on tertiary care hospitals. He stressed the importance of a strong and efficient referral system between primary health centres and tertiary care institutions. He noted that a well-structured referral mechanism ensures that patients requiring specialized care are timely referred to higher centres like AIIMS Guwahati, while common and manageable conditions continue to be effectively treated at the primary level. Strengthening the existing referral linkage, he stated, would improve continuity of care, optimize the utilization of tertiary services, and reduce unnecessary patient burden on higher healthcare facilities.
The visit concluded with discussions on further improving infrastructure, expanding outreach activities, and strengthening preventive and promotive health services through the institute’s health centres. The initiative reflects AIIMS Guwahati’s commitment to enhancing primary health care and ensuring accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare for the people of the region.
