The maiden academic session at the Late Jagjivan Ram Government Medical College in Pithoragarh is likely to commence in full only after the Diwali holidays. Meanwhile, the newly admitted students under the All India quota will have to travel long distances to reach their homes to celebrate the festival.

Dr A.K. Singh, principal of the medical college, said the institution had decided to begin the foundation course for its first batch of students from October 28, but regular academic activities would commence only after the Diwali holidays.

“We have decided to start the foundation course for the first batch of students from October 28. However, the full academic session is likely to begin only after the Diwali holidays,” the principal said.

He said the last date for admission had initially been fixed as October 26. However, as one student admitted under the All India quota had not reported to the college, the deadline was extended to October 27.

The first batch comprises 50 students, including 43 admitted under the state quota and seven under the All India quota. While all 43 students under the state quota have completed their admissions, one of the seven students admitted under the All India quota is yet to report to the institution.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inspected the medical college on October 25 and assured the institution of all possible assistance from the state government.
