The road connecting two high altitude villages of Darma valley in Dharchula sub- division of Pithoragarh district was washed away in an avalanche on Sunday creating problems for the people migrating to their villages for the summer months, according to  Divesh Shashni, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Dharchula said.

“The glacier came down between Baling and Dugtu villages of Darma valley and took away the road. A batch of seven villagers crossing the road had to run to save themselves from cascading glacier ,”said Pan Singh Datal, a home stay owner in Darma valley.

According to SDM, the glacier has taken away 20 meters of the road and would soon be repaired for smooth migration of villagers who go to their villages in the summer months .

The villagers said that the avalanche occured due to delayed snowfall in high Himalayan region this year.” Otherwise the snow  even in high Himalayan valleys used to melt by this time but unseasonal snowfall has accumulated lot of snow on the slopes, ” said Govind Selal, a villager in Sela village of Darma valley.
